About Ruth Carter
Costume Designer
  
Ruth Carter is a two-time Academy Award nominee for her work on Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and Steven Spielberg’s Amistad. Her love for costume designing began in the theater. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Theater Arts from Hampton University and interned at the Santa Fe Opera.

Amongst Carter’s numerous and diverse film credits Do The Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, What’s Love Got To Do With It, And Shaft, Ruth has collaborated with Hollywood’s “A-list” directors including Steven Spielberg, John Singleton, Joss Wheadon on the feature films Amistad, Four Brothers and Serenity. She is a long-time collaborator of another “A-lister, ” Spike Lee, where her professional career began. Consequently, with Spike, Ruth has collaborated on eleven of his feature films and numerous commercials. Ruth’s most recently released work can be seen in, Imagine That, Black Dynomite, and Spread.

2009 began with Halle Berry in the feature film, Frankie And Alice and followed with the new CBS series Miami Trauma. Presently, Ruth is working with Tyler Perry on “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enough, based on the Obie winning play by Ntozoke Shange.

Ruth has enjoyed more than 20 years as a professional costume designer for film, television, commercials and theater.
