Alexandria Bombach - United States
The Documentary Award - Frame by Frame

Alexandria Bombach
Director - Producer

Director, Producer Alexandria Bombach is the recipient of TheWIFTS 2016 Documentary Award for Frame By Frame, an uncompromising account by four journalists about life after the Taliban and the importance of preserving the art of photography by documenting, building and maintaining a free press, something that is taken for granted in the free world.

Alexandria Bombach is an award-winning filmmaker from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Founding her production company Red Reel in 2009, Alexandria has spent the last seven years living "on the road" as a filmmaker and freelance documentary director and cinematographer. Red Reel is a video production company that was founded through a sneaking suspicion that nothing is impossible. Posed as a quiet rebellion against the ache of the recession in 2009, Red Reel has always been about taking risks for that thing you believe in. For us, it's the power of storytelling.

Focusing on character-driven stories evoking empathy rather than sympathy for the human condition, Alexandria's work challenges the perceptions of cultures, issues and ideas that usually have limited or sensationalized coverage in mainstream media.

One of her first productions was 23 Feet, a 30 minute documentary about people living a simple life to do what they love in the outdoors. 23 Feet takes an in-depth look at what it means to live for your passions – the highs and the lows.

The film screened at festivals in 15 countries and toured across the U.S. in a rogue distribution outlet: her 1970 Airstream with a screen attached became the outdoor theatre where people watched 23 Feet.

In 2012, Alexandria directed and produced the Emmy award-winning series Moveshake that gave an honest look into the complicated lives of people who have set out to make a positive environmental or social impact.

Her feature-length documentary, Frame By Frame, follows the lives of four Afghan photojournalists who are facing the realities of building Afghanistan's first free press. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Now, as foreign troops and media withdraw, Afghanistan is left to stand on its own, and so are its journalists. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, Frame By Frame follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape – reframing Afghanistan for the world, and for themselves. Through cinema vérité, intimate interviews, powerful photojournalism, and never-before-seen archival footage shot in secret during the Taliban regime, the film connects audiences with four humans in the pursuit of the truth.

Frame By Frame had its world premiere at SXSW in 2015 and has won more than 19 festival awards.
